This image was shot in St Paul’s church at the recent wedding of Cara and Daniel in Chester. During the early part of my career I had a tendency to over shoot a church ceremony but now I only shoot the key moments (arrival of bride, vows, ring exchange, signing). I do this to not only save time in the editing process but also to stake out the light / locations to create images like the one below. This church had an amazing unused balcony area that was really steep and had this huge gothic style window. The steepness of it gave me this cool idea to create a low angle shot emphasising the size and shape of the window. I am shooting towards the light and so I was looking to achieve a semi sillhouette effect and therefore the bride is facing the window. The effect was achieved by simply dialling + 2 exposure compensation into my camera which was just enough to retain a small amount of detail in the dress without completely blowing out the windows. The low angle gives the image drama and to get the best out of shooting into the light I asked the bride to lift her veil. A risky shot that can look a bit cliche but I know what I like and this is one of my fave images of 2011 so far.
I hope you like it – technical/artistic comments welcome…
